It’s incredibly important, however, that you do not hesitate. Each minute can be the difference between a full recovery or permanent and potentially fatal brain damage.
While the most important part of handling an overdose is getting emergency service help, the first step is actually identifying the physical and mental signs of this potentially fatal condition.
This can actually be more difficult than many people might imagine. Most people think that surely they'll be able to tell if someone is overdosing. But in reality, the symptoms aren't always so clear-cut.
Individual physiology, the amount taken, whether it was mixed with other substances, and many other factors all come into play in which symptoms actually present.

In most people’s minds, support groups for addiction are synonymous with 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon.
And it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise either. 12-step groups like these are without a doubt some of the most popular and widespread self-help groups the world has ever seen. And since their founding in the early 1900s, they’ve helped literally millions of people abstain from using and finding the joy of a clean and sober life.
If someone has a serious problem, chances are there’s a 12-step group devoted to it.
And these groups have been proven to help people recover from their substance abuse when used effectively. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) even lists it as one of the 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies for recovery.
Within the Caldwell, Idaho area, there are three 12-step groups in particular that residents can use to help treat their substance abuse problems: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Al-Anon.
The 12-step group that started it all, Alcoholics Anonymous or AA was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1935.
Within 5 years of its beginnings, membership grew to around 1,400, and the number of groups around the country expanded to an impressive 50. Since then, AA has grown to almost 2.1 million members and over 120 thousand weekly groups around the world.

Added to that, the benefits of what is essentially group therapy can be especially powerful in helping alcoholics overcome cravings, avoid triggers, and learn from the experiences of others.

Narcotics Anonymous or NA is one of the first offshoots of AA and follows the same 12-step format, just like other anonymous groups. But while AA focuses on a single substance of abuse, NA is open to healing addiction in all its forms. And despite common misconceptions, it welcomes alcoholics just as it does heroin users, meth addicts, and substance abusers of any kind.
And while the organization is composed of almost 67 thousand meetings taking place in 139 countries, it isn’t quite as large as Alcoholics Anonymous. As a result, finding an NA meeting nearby can be a bit trickier.

Addiction is a complicated disease. In addition to the fact that it’s still not fully understood, it is also especially devastating because it impacts nearly every aspect of an individual’s life.
And that includes friends, family members, and even associates and coworkers.
When it comes to recovery, these other individuals are often left behind while the addict themselves remain the focus of treatment. However, it’s important that friends and family members also have access to the support they need to resume healthy, functional lives as well.
For them, there’s Al-Anon – a friend/family focused 12-step group that helps these individuals recover from the fallout from a loved one’s addiction.
Topics discussed here can include everything from:
Al-Anon can be an essential support group for anyone who has had to watch a friend or family member succumb to addiction.
There is also Alateen – an Al-Anon subgroup devoted to helping teenagers cope with addiction in their family or circle of friends. These groups are specially designed to take into account the age-specific issues that these individuals face during their formative years. They can also provide a support network of similarly aged peers, making members more open to sharing and healing.

12-step groups like those above aren’t the only option when it comes to nearby support groups. In fact, there are a number of alternatives to AA and NA that many people in the area may not even know about.
Three of the largest and most helpful are SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Moderation Management.
One of the biggest and most popular evidence-based alternatives to 12-step groups is SMART Recovery. This group is evidence-based just like anonymous groups but doesn’t follow the 12-step model.
Instead, it teaches members concrete techniques and strategies for coping with cravings, avoiding triggers, and maintaining a sober lifestyle. Groups are led by a certified instructor rather than the members themselves and lessons change as new discoveries in the field of addiction are made.
One of the major differentiators from 12-step groups is that it teaches self-reliance in the face of addiction rather than powerlessness.
Not everyone will be able to make it to in-person meetings. Time constraints, lack of access to a vehicle, a prohibitively busy schedule, and so much more can all make catching a meeting tough.
Luckily, there are plenty of online alternatives to in-person meetings. These groups can include everything from regular emails and forum posts to real-time chats and even Skype calls. No matter how you want to communicate, there’s probably an online option devoted to it.
While helpful support groups and recovery meetings are an excellent resource for recovering addicts and alcoholics, they are usually not the first step in the journey. Most addictions initially require more intensive professional programs, such as a detox or rehab program, or both. The support found at groups like AA or NA is great for maintaining your sobriety. However, to get to the point where the help you find there is sufficient, rehab is necessary.
When it comes to selecting which drug or alcohol rehab program you should go with, there are few choices more important than inpatient or outpatient. There are many factors that go into making this choice, and the correct selection depends on considering every single one of them. The last thing you want is to discover after the selection has been made that the choice was the incorrect one.
Your sobriety depends on the best program for your addiction, so making the right choice here is key.
Outpatient rehab is where you live at home or at a halfway house during the treatment program. A schedule is made in the beginning, and the frequency of therapy sessions can vary, usually depending on how severe the drug or alcohol addiction is. Having a predictable schedule like the ones most outpatient rehabs provide is the best way to develop the ongoing tools and skills that are vital to the longevity of your sobriety.
Outpatient rehab is usually the best answer for those recovering addicts and alcoholics who have heavier commitments and obligations on a regular basis. For example, a mother with a small child may not be able to be away from home all the time. Outpatient rehab is also a good choice for those whose addictions are less severe.
An inpatient rehab program consists of living at the facility for the entirety of the program. This is usually in a hospital setting, with the living arrangements in a dormitory-type setting. Each day is filled with therapy and activities that teach and help without overwhelming. Inpatient rehab is usually the best choice for more intense addictions, and for people who can be away from their home for an extended period of time.
There are many different facilities in Caldwell that treat alcohol and drug addiction, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Currently, there are 16 total treatment centers in Caldwell itself. Out of these, 10 offer services for both drug and alcohol addiction, with the remaining six focus on drug abuse in specific. All but one of Caldwell's facilities are outpatient in nature.
If you are not constrained to attending an outpatient drug or alcohol rehab program in Caldwell itself, there is an excellent choice in Ashwood Recovery. Ashwood Recovery facilities are located in the state capital of Boise. Facilities offer services for the treatment of both alcohol and drug addiction, as well as co-occurring disorder (dual diagnosis).
There are different treatment options found at Ashwood Recovery, usually depending on the severity of your addiction. Standard outpatient is available, for those whose addictions are low to moderate in intensity. Partial hospital, and intensive outpatient, are also choices available for more serious addictions.
If you are looking for an excellent inpatient program, it would be difficult to find a better option than Northpoint Recovery. Our facility is located in Boise, and provides a 28-day inpatient program for both drug and alcohol addiction. This also includes a detox phase, which takes up the first week of the program. Depending on which type of substance is at the root of the addiction, medications may be administered to help with withdrawal symptoms. Once detox has been completed, the remaining three weeks are dedicated to the rehab process.
While cash or a payment plan are options when seeking addiction recovery, the most common way to pay for drug and alcohol rehab is health insurance. However, it’s important to remember that while some programs might be closer than others, proximity isn’t the only thing to look for in a professional program. Quality of care, comfort of amenities, qualifications of staff, personalization of treatment plans, and so much more should all come into play as well.
Just because a program is close, then, doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you. You can use this quick rehab facility checklist to help you figure out if a program is a good fit for your individual needs.

Detoxification – Detox is the first step in treating a drug or alcohol addiction. This stage of recovery is when the body firsts begins to get used to functioning without the substance of abuse. Inpatient Rehabilitation – Rehab is where the more mental healing from addiction takes place and is usually composed of behavioral therapies aimed at changing the way the brain functions on a day-to-day level. Individual counseling and group therapy are a big part of rehab too.
An inpatient form of rehab requires patients to stay on campus at all times. Eating, sleeping, treatment, and leisure all take place within the confines of the program, allowing for a more controlled environment and less of a chance of relapse.
The tradeoff, however, is less freedom and a much more significant commitment than other programs. Patients, for example, are usually not able to continue their education, go to work, or even attend to certain familial obligations during this time. It can also cost more than other programs.
An inpatient program is usually around one month long.
Outpatient Rehab – An outpatient program will typically employ the same treatments and therapies as inpatient programs. However, it offers much more flexibility. Instead of patients being required to stay on the campus at all times, they come in for treatment for several hours at a time, usually in the evenings.
As a result, recovering addicts can go to work, attend classes, and live their day-to-day lives much more normally than with an inpatient program.
While an outpatient program is more flexible, it doesn’t offer the same level of care and treatment as an inpatient program since less time is devoted to it. Plus, the risk of can be much higher since the environment is not nearly as controlled.
An outpatient program is usually around three months long.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – A step up from outpatient, an intensive outpatient program or IOP offers a more focused form of treatment without the level of commitment required for an inpatient program.
Patients in these programs will typically meet during the evenings (like outpatient), but treatment sessions will usually last much longer and occur more frequently.
These programs are usually around three months long as well.
It’s a great way to receive a higher level of care without giving up the time and money that most inpatient programs require.
If there's one thing that almost everyone thinks about when considering professional treatment, it's cost. The price tag of treatment can be a deal breaker for some. And in fact, nearly one-third of addicts who knew they needed treatment but didn't get it cited the cost of treatment as the primary reason.
And it’s true – treatment can be pricey in some cases. But today more than ever, it’s actually a lot more affordable than most people think.
Part of it has to do with health insurance. After the passage of two key laws, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the majority of insurers were required to cover addiction treatment more completely than ever before.
And depending on the provider, some patients may only be responsible for a small copay – that’s it.
As always though, it’s important to know what you’re covered for beforehand. That’s why you should always verify your insurance coverage before partnering with any program.
If you don't have private insurance, you may be able to use federally-funded health care through Medicare or Medicaid. These programs are designed only for the elderly, those with special needs, or the economically disadvantaged, so not everyone will qualify.
And finally, many facilities are willing to work with patients on a one-on-one basis to figure out payment. They may use payment plans, financing options, or even sliding scale pricing. So don’t be afraid to personally reach out to programs if you’re afraid you can’t cover the costs.
In the end, there are a variety of resources available to help make professional treatment a financially viable option for you. And no matter what kind of treatment you get, the costs are nothing compared to the expense of addiction as a whole.
