There are so many helpful alcohol and drug addiction recovery resources in the Garden City, Idaho area. The problem is that a lot of people do not know where to turn when they need assistance. Instead, they will try to stop using on their own, and that never turns out well. In most cases, they will suffer through a relapse and put themselves at risk of a deadly overdose. In other cases, they will just continue to use because they see no other options.
We would like people to know that they do have options available to them. 12-Step meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous can be an excellent source of support. Families can turn to Al-Anon and Alateen to learn more about addiction and to get help for the challenges they face. Also, it is always a good idea to consider professional addiction treatment as well. Drug and alcohol rehab and detox have helped so many overcome their substance abuse problems.
Because so many people are unaware of their options, we have come up with this addiction resource guide for the Garden City area. It lists out all of the meetings in the local community, and it also provides information about treatment options. We have no affiliation with any of the organizations we list here.
Alcoholics Anonymous is an organization that has been around for several decades. It was founded in 1935 by two men who were both alcoholics themselves. They wanted to stop drinking, and they felt that they could do that with the help of others with the same goal. That first AA meeting only consisted of the two of them, but the idea caught on like wildfire.
The only requirement for attending an AA meeting is to have the desire to stop drinking. There are no membership fees or dues that need to be paid. Other alcoholics in recovery lead the meetings, which may be Big Book studies, discussion groups or speaker meetings.
There are many Garden City area AA meetings for people to choose from. This makes it much easier for them to find one that is convenient for them.

Like AA, Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that focuses on the 12 Steps of Recovery. They do make some changes to the steps, but the message is relatively the same. NA was started in 1955 as a way for drug addicts to get support from others facing the same struggles.
One of the things that makes NA so unique is the fact that anyone is welcome to attend, regardless of their addiction. They even allow alcoholics to attend their meetings. It is free to become a member of this organization, and there is no charge to attend a meeting.
It is easy to find NA meetings in the Garden City area. There are several of them taking place all week long.

For families, living with the fact that someone they love has an addiction can be so difficult. This is especially true when they really do not know much about substance abuse at all. Many believe that life would be better if their loved one could just stop using, and they do not understand why they cannot. They also worry about their loved one’s safety. This is why Al-Anon is so important.
Al-Anon offers weekly meetings for families to help them cope with the reality of having an addicted loved one. Family members can sit down and talk with others who are facing the same challenges they are. They can also learn more about what addiction is, and why it is so hard for their loved ones to just quit. It is a tremendous source of support and information.
For families with addicted loved ones, attending Al-Anon meetings in the Garden City area can be so helpful. There are many taking place throughout the week.

Teenagers and young adults face unique challenges when someone they love is an addict. They have so many feelings, but may not feel like they have anyone they can talk to about them. Alateen provides them with a safe place where they can talk freely to people who understand what they are going through.
Alateen is a part of Al-Anon and their work is so important. Without these types of support group meetings, many of these young people may slip into depression or suffer from other mental health issues.
There is one Garden City area Alateen meeting taking place each week. This is the information for that meeting.

Teenagers are more than welcome to participate in online Alateen chat meetings. There is a full schedule of these meetings on their website. Also, young people should feel welcome to attend any Al-Anon meeting. There are no age limits for these meetings.
Unfortunately, overdoses are becoming more and more frequent in the United States. Alcohol poisoning is also a problem, and the fear of these emergency situations plagues those who have a friend or family member with an addiction.
For those who believe a loved one has overdosed on drugs, or who has consumed too much alcohol, there are certain steps that should be taken.
All of the above are excellent resources, but the reality is that sometimes people need more. It can be very difficult for someone to start getting help for an addiction just by attending a support group for a variety of reasons.
First and foremost, the physical addiction to drugs and/or alcohol can be very hard to break. In some cases, it may even be dangerous just to stop using cold turkey, without any type of treatment. Many people need to go through detox first, and for a lot of addictions, it is a required step.
Secondly, drug or alcohol rehab is often needed once detox has been completed. This will help to address the psychological reasons behind the addiction. By doing this, people can learn what led them to use in the first place and get treatment for the underlying cause.
Most people with addictions understand (at least partially) what withdrawal feels like. But many of them do not know how serious it can become. They may have only felt the initial stage of withdrawal because they were able to use again to get those feelings to go away.
Withdrawal can be very hard to go through, and for a lot of people, it is enough to drive them back to substance abuse. Some drugs require detoxification once the person is ready to quit. For example, alcohol, heroin, opioid painkillers and stimulants all require detox. Their withdrawal symptoms can become life threatening.
Detox helps by removing toxins from the body that are related to the substance use. It can ease withdrawal symptoms and help the individual feel better faster.
As we stated earlier, rehabilitation works on the mental part of the addiction. People have the opportunity to work with a therapist in an individual setting. It is the therapist’s job to determine if the person is suffering from a co-occurring disorder. Research shows that as many as 50% of people with addictions started using to self-medicate one of the following conditions:
These mental health conditions are debilitating, and if they are left untreated, the person will likely go back to using after treatment is over. This is why it is so important for them to be addressed.
At Ashwood Recovery, we want you to know that we are here to help you. Maybe you would like more information about the resources available to you in the Garden City area. Or, perhaps you are interested in learning more about what professional treatment options might be right for you. Regardless, we are here for you.
Do you have questions about local Garden City drug and alcohol recovery resources, detox or rehab? Please contact us to learn more.
Our admissions coordinators are here to help you get started with treatment the right way. They'll verify your health insurance, help set up travel arrangements, and make sure your transition into treatment is smooth and hassle-free.
