How to Prepare for a Partial Hospitalization Program

Two reasons that there are choices for addiction rehab are that no two people are identical in their needs, history, and situations, and not all addictions are the same. When medical and mental health clinicians work on creating a treatment plan for someone with a substance use disorder, they consider a wide range of factors. Whether you need a regular outpatient rehab program, an intensive outpatient program (IOP), or a partial hospitalization program (PHP) depends on how those factors intersect in your case. There are PHP options for mental health and addiction near you. Learn more about them to find out how you can access the level of care you need.

At Ashwood Recovery, our evidence-based addiction therapies are fundamental to all our treatments, including our partial hospitalization program options. Partial Hospitalization Program Options

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides the highest level of care available on an outpatient basis. It is an excellent option for those:

  • Who have experienced previous relapses
  • With severe substance use disorders
  • With co-occurring disorders (dual diagnosis)
  • Who live in a trigger-free environment
  • With a reliable at-home support network
  • With work, school, or family obligations that make residential rehab very difficult
  • With financial considerations making inpatient treatment unworkable

If some or all of the points above fit your circumstances, a PHP may be ideal for you. Reach out today by calling Ashwood Recovery at 888.341.3607.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A PHP, also known as a day treatment program, allows clients to return to their homes at night while receiving a level of care commensurate with an inpatient program. The daily structure of a PHP typically requires a time commitment of 25 to 30 hours per week, averaging between four and six hours a day over five days. The benchmark duration of any rehab program, including most PHPs, is 30 days, though your treatment plan may call for a longer or shorter time commitment.

In your PHP, you will have access to a range of evidence-based programs and support opportunities, including:

  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy and meetings
  • Group therapy
  • Dual diagnosis treatment
  • Medical supervision
  • Medication management
  • Life skills education, including job and education assistance

Preparing for a PHP

When you enter a PHP for a substance misuse disorder, you can keep some level of connection to your work or school responsibilities. Still, because of the intense level of care and time required, you will have to be honest with your employer or school about your need for accommodations.

Reaching out to family and friends to help you make PHP addiction rehab work is also essential. Your ability to focus on daily life will be diminished because of the commitment and focus demanded of you in a partial hospitalization program. It can feel challenging to ask for help, but part of the recovery process includes acknowledging your inability to control all aspects of your life and admitting that you need help. Asking for help so you can begin that journey is a proper first step.
