Like AA, Narcotics Anonymous uses the 12-step approach to recovery too. And in fact, NA was one of the first offshoots of Alcoholics Anonymous and was founded all the way back in 1953.

While Al-Anon is great for those hurt by someone else’s drinking, not everyone will feel comfortable sharing their stories in these groups. And young people in particular may find it hard opening up to a group of people two, three, or even four times their age.
Alateen aims to solve that problem by catering specifically to young friends and family members of alcoholics. Groups typically have a specific age range of around 10 to 20 years old. And that can make a world of difference to young members in need of support.

A vast and dedicated social support network is key for maintaining sobriety in the long-term. But for many, the initial stages of recovery are the hardest to get through without relapsing. And while support groups are great, they often can’t provide the level of care required to push through these initial stages.
That’s where professional treatment programs come in. These programs use evidence-based strategies, treatments, and approaches for addiction that are actually proven to work. And when they are used in conjunction with long-term support groups, recovering addicts have the absolute best chance of staying clean permanently.
There are two stages to professional treatment in particular: detoxification and rehabilitation.
Detoxification comes first. This stage of treatment deals mostly with withdrawal. This is when the body is forced to reacclimate to functioning normally without the addictive substance. And along the way, the patient will usually experience a range of uncomfortable side effects known as withdrawals.
