Chubbuck, Idaho Overdose, Addiction, & Treatment Resources

Like many other towns across the country, Chubbuck, Idaho is no stranger to the ravages of addiction. Part of the Pocatello Metropolitan Statistical Area, this small community has struggled with addiction to alcohol and other illicit substances for decades.

And if you are suffering from addiction in Chubbuck, it may feel like you have nowhere to turn for help. Luckily, there are a number of resources to choose from to help you recover: from overdose help and local support groups to educational opportunities and professional treatment options.

No matter where you’re at with your addiction, you don’t have to suffer through it alone.

This comprehensive guide to addiction resources in Chubbuck, Idaho will help you figure out where to turn for help when it comes to addiction, and what you need to recover for good.

Addiction – What are the Effects?

The effects of addiction to prescription drugs, illicit drugs, or alcohol are felt far and wide. In Chubbuck, Idaho, if you are suffering from addiction, you are not alone in your fight to overcome it. Getting the help you need is vitally important to your future. Each person deals with the circumstances and symptoms of addiction differently., but regardless of how you cope, there is help.

Major life repercussions that affect nearly every addict include health problems like severe liver damage, mood disorders like depression or axiety, high risk of potentially fatal overdoses, serious financial problems and legal troubles like DUI arrests

But regardless of how you use, there are major life repercussions that affect nearly every addict. These include:

Addiction doesn’t just impact the substance abuser themselves either. Just like any other mental disease, the detrimental effects seep into the lives of those close to the addict as well – friends, family members, partners, and even coworkers can all be negatively impacted by an individual’s substance abuse.

And of course, this can lead to the breakdown of social and familial relationships, stifled career development, and most importantly, a dissolution of trust among the people an addict cares about most.

Given just how extensive the damage from substance abuse and addiction can be, it’s critical to know where to look for help.

In a word, BAD.

Since the early 2000s, drug overdose deaths have been on a steady climb year over year. And recently, this rise has taken a turn for the worst thanks mostly to the ever-raging opioid epidemic (fueled by prescription opioids like OxyContin, Vicodin, and Percocet as well as illicit Fentanyl and heroin).

In 2016 alone more than 72,000 Americans died from complications stemming from an overdose. That’s well over the number killed by falls, guns, or car accidents.

In fact, fatal drug overdoses have become so common and so widespread around the country, that drug overdoses are now the number one cause of death among Americans under the age of 50.

And within Idaho itself, addiction is just as big of a problem.

Here are a few local statistics to help put the Idaho drug epidemic into perspective.

  • Between 1999 and 2013, the number of Idaho deaths from drug misuse has more than doubled.
  • Fatal car crashes have risen by 21% from 2014 to 2015. And 40% of those crashes are due to drunk driving.
  • 1 out of 5 high schoolers in Idaho has used a prescription drug illicitly.
  • Heroin seized by the Idaho State Police skyrocketed by 800% from 2014 to 2015.
  • Meth cases in the area more than tripled from 2014 to 2015.
  • 93% of Oregon-Idaho law enforcement officers who responded to a national survey thought that meth more than any other drug contributes to violent crime in the area.
  • Drug trafficking is prevalent in the area. IN 2015 alone, 107 drug trafficking organizations and 7 money laundering organizations were operating in the area.

Drug or Alcohol Overdose Support

The detrimental effects of a substance abuse problem are extensive, that much is clear. But one of the most damaging and terrifying potential issues that can arise from using a drug illicitly is an overdose.

Overdosing on drugs and/or alcohol can cause serious physical damage to internal organs like the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and the brain, signs of overdose include vomiting, confusion, seizures, slow breathing, hypothermia, blue tinged skin, irregular breathing and unconsciousness

An overdose occurs when the body is flooded by a harmful substance or substances faster than it can process it. Taking too much of a drug, mixing it with other substances like alcohol, or using drugs that have been mixed with harmful fillers and cutting agents can all result in an overdose.

While these overdoses are not always necessarily fatal, many of them can be. And one of the biggest factors in the extent of the damage is how quickly the individual receives emergency medical care.

In the case of an overdose, it is recommended to immediately call 911, try performing CPR, induce vomiting or rehydrate the victim in order to avoid a fatal overcome

That’s why it’s so important to know exactly how to spot the signs of a drug or alcohol overdose early on – because knowing what to look for just may end up saving a life.

Not all overdoses look alike. And just how addiction as a whole affects everyone differently, not all people going through an overdose will exhibit the same symptoms. Symptoms also depend on the substance of abuse as well.

Below are some of the most common signs of an overdose to watch for when it comes to the most frequently abused drugs.

Heroin - According to MedlinePlus, some of the most common heroin overdose symptoms to be on the lookout for include:

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Alcohol - The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) points out a couple of signs of alcohol poisoning, including:

  • Mental confusion, stupor, coma, or inability to wake up
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (fewer than 8 breaths per minute)
  • Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths)
  • Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness

Cocaine/Crack Cocaine - Some of the most common symptoms of a cocaine overdose according to MedlinePlus include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Benzodiazepines - MedlinePlus points out that overdosing on benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium) can bring on a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Bluish-colored lips and fingernails
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Breathing is slow, labored, or stopped
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness, lack of alertness
  • Excitability
  • Hiccups
  • Rapid side-to-side movement of the eyes
  • Rash
  • Stomach upset
  • Tiredness
  • Tremor
  • Weakness, uncoordinated movement

Crystal Meth - Signs of a meth overdose according to MedlinePlus include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Prescription Opioids - According to MedlinePlus, some symptoms that may occur during a prescription opioid overdose to watch for include:

  • The person's face is extremely pale and/or feels clammy to the touch
  • Their body goes limp
  • Their fingernails or lips have a purple or blue color
  • They start vomiting or making gurgling noises
  • They cannot be awakened or are unable to speak
  • Their breathing or heartbeat slows or stops

If you’ve identified the signs of an overdose, the very first step is to contact emergency services. Call 9-1-1 immediately.

It’s important to remember here that every second is crucial when it comes to treating a drug overdose. Some people may hesitate to call 9-1-1 because the overdose may have been on an illegal drug. They may convince themselves that the person will pull through, that they just need a few minutes to recover.

This type of thinking can be deadly.

Every second the brain goes without oxygen (a common result of an overdose) increases the likelihood of permanent brain damage as well as death. So if you’re wondering whether you should call emergency services, the answer should always be a resounding YES.

9-1-1 operators will be able to instruct you in administering life-saving support while you wait for an ambulance to arrive.

12-Step Meetings in Chubbuck, ID

12-step meetings are a fantastic way for addicts and friends and family members of substance abusers to get the motivational and emotional support they need to adopt healthier life strategies.

Chubbuck Addiction Resouces

As the name implies, these programs (including AA, NA, Al-Anon, and Nar-Anon) all stem from the same 12-step methodology first founded by Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935.

12 steps meetings are groups that are populated by fellow recovering addicts and provide an essential form of motivational and emotional support, 12 step meetings programs include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, AL Anon, and Nar Anon, these programs are 100 percent anonymous and free to attend

These groups are incredibly common across the country and the world at large. Plus, they’re 100% free, open to all, and are not affiliated with any particular organization, government, or belief system.

Most meetings follow the group talk format – where members are free to bring up any problems they’re struggling with at the time involving addiction and discuss with the group. Some meetings also study specific program literature, involve a speaker, or host special events like potlucks or birthday celebrations.

But more than anything, these groups show members that a life of sobriety is possible through rigorous honesty, both with oneself and with others.

Alcoholics Anonymous or AA, has been helping people overcome alcohol addiction for over 80 years. By using AA’s 12-step program, people from all over the world have beaten their addictions, and so can you.

In fact, in 2017 AA had a worldwide membership of almost 2.1 million and more than 120 thousand groups holding weekly meetings.

Like many other 12-step groups, AA incorporates member sponsors – a kind of mentorship for people new to the program.

And also like other 12-step programs, Alcoholics Anonymous is completely free and open to anyone who wants to control their drinking.

Within Chubbuck, there is only one meeting that takes place.

Find More Idaho AA Meetings Here

Narcotics Anonymous or NA takes a more generalized approach to the type of addictions it addresses. And contrary to popular belief, this program isn’t just for drug users either. In fact, these groups even welcome alcoholics in addition to those addicted to illicit substances.

Though not as popular as AA, the group that it grew out of, Narcotics Anonymous boasts some hefty numbers across the world. According to estimates, there are around 67 thousand weekly meetings that take place in 139 different countries.

And just like AA, Narcotics Anonymous meetings are famously welcoming to all, completely confidential, and 100% free for all members.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any Narcotics Anonymous meetings that take place within Chubbuck itself. However, NA is still an incredibly popular support group. And as a result, there are a number of meetings that take place within the surrounding areas.

Substance abuse hurts more than just the addicted individual. Friends and family members also suffer along the way. And unfortunately, many don’t get the extra help that they need to cope with a loved one’s addiction and repair their own lives.

For them, there are Al-Anon and Alateen. These groups are focused on providing the emotional and motivational support friends and family members of addicts need. They can also offer advice on how to stop enabling a loved one’s drug habits, getting them help, and supporting them during recovery.

Al-Anon groups are also relatively common in the Chubbuck and surrounding areas. Have a look at the list of meetings below, each taking place within 50 miles of Chubbuck.

Non 12-Step Groups

12-step meetings aren’t the only options when it comes to support groups. In fact, some people find that the “spirituality" that these meetings imply doesn't mix with their own personal beliefs. It should be mentioned, however, that 12-step groups openly state that they are not affiliated with any particular religion, and members of all faiths and belief systems are welcome to attend.

Alternatives to support groups emphasize rational decision making, they are not religious or spiritual in nature and they do not see surrendering to a higher power as a necessity for abstinence. Smart recovery and secular organizations for sobriety (SOS) are great alternatives for those who feel the spiritual approach of 12 steps is not suited for them

Even still, if you are looking for other options for support and recovery, there are alternatives. The three most common are SMART Recovery, Moderation Management, and Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.).

SMART Recovery is a self-help support group focused on empowering recovering addicts to take their recovery into their own hands. It offers scientifically-tested techniques, strategies, and approaches to addiction that are proven to help reduce cravings and decrease the chances of relapse.

Groups are also led by a certified instructor rather than the member community – an approach that helps provide consistency and accuracy of information.

Added to that, the techniques and lessons found in SMART Recovery meetings change with the findings in the field of addiction research.

Online Support Groups For Addicts

While the best way to attend these meetings is usually in person, many also offer online alternatives as well. These might include online forums, real-time chats, and even teleconferencing options too.

Online support groups for addicts are online alternatives, they may include online forums, real time chats, and even teleconferencing options from organizations like alcoholics anonymous, narcotics anonymous, Al Anon, SMART Recovery, Moderation Management and secular organizations for sobriety

In the end, if meeting in person isn’t appealing or just doesn’t mesh well with your schedule, there are still plenty of other options for recovery that are available. Have a look below for some of the most helpful online groups.

Alcoholics Anonymous has well over one hundred online chapters to choose from. These include groups focused on sharing personal experiences, discussing the 12 steps, taking a deeper dive into the literature, and so much more.

Narcotics Anonymous has a plethora of online options as well. These include Skype meetings, online chats, and many other options too. All it takes to find them is going to their meeting search page and selecting “Web” under “Country” in the “NA Meeting Search” area.

Al-Anon also offers plenty of online alternatives which you can find here.

SMART Recovery has a robust online community that members can take advantage of.

Professional Treatment Options in Chubbuck

For many, 12-step groups and education alone won’t be enough to fully eradicate an addiction and maintain sobriety in the long-term. And in fact, most addicts need specialized care from professional addiction treatment programs to truly recover.

Most professional programs will offer either one or a combination of the two core phases of recovery treatment: detoxification and rehabilitation.

Most professional programs offer one or a combination of the two core phases of recovery treatment which are detoxification and rehabilitation

Detoxification - Over the course of an addiction, the body becomes physically altered to function normally only in the presence of the addictive substance. And when that substance is removed from habitual use routines, the body of an addict has a hard time functioning without it. The result is a host of uncomfortable physical and mental side effects known as withdrawals.

Withdrawals can be excruciating in some circumstances. Muscle aches, nausea, sweating, diarrhea, heart palpitations, and even depression, mania, and hallucinations are all possible.

It isn’t any wonder, then, why so many addicts end up turning back to drugs during this process.

Professional detox services help patients push through the uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal while monitoring their health for any serious (and potentially deadly) complications that can result.

In the end, a professional detox program not only helps addicts refrain from resorting back to using, but they also keep people safe as well.

Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation – While detoxification is a crucial part of any recovery program and sets the foundation for long-term success, it alone is not enough to treat addiction.

In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) points out that “medical detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use.”

In order to ensure the absolute best chances of long-term recovery, patients simply must undergo rehabilitation as well. While detox can be thought of as treatment for the body, rehab is more focused on treating the mind for addiction.

These programs teach patients coping strategies for controlling cravings, techniques for avoiding environmental triggers, and strategies for managing life stress – a significant contributor to relapse for recovering addicts.

Therapies such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, and EMDR are some of the most common in rehab while individual counseling, group therapy, and stress management classes are often involved in treatment as well.

While rehab is an essential part of any recovery, not all rehab programs are the same, and there are pros and cons to each type.

Knowing the specifics of each is a vital part of choosing the right facility to meet your specific needs. Have a look at the three major types of rehabilitation programs below to make choosing the right program even easier.

Inpatient Rehab – What most people imagine when they think of rehab, an inpatient program requires patients to stay on the campus grounds at all time. They eat, sleep, receive treatment, and spend their free hours at the program facility and can usually only leave with a chaperone.

This allows for a more controlled environment (which reduces the temptation to fall back into using) while also forcing a more intensive focus on recovery. This type of treatment is considered the "gold standard" in rehabilitation for many.

However, inpatient programs tend to be much more expensive than the alternatives. Added to that, patients typically cannot attend classes, go to work, or meet certain family obligations while in the program.

An inpatient treatment program will usually last about one month.

Outpatient Rehabilitation – In contrast to inpatient programs, the name of the game with outpatient treatment is flexibility. While these facilities typically offer similar therapies to inpatient, an outpatient model lets patients attend to day-to-day obligations and coming in for treatment for just a few hours a day.

This kind of program is obviously less intrusive, but it also comes with a greater risk of relapse since the environment of the patients isn’t controlled 24/7. Plus, it also can’t offer the same level of care and focus on recovery as an inpatient program can, though it is significantly cheaper.

Some recovering addicts use outpatient programs as a form of continuing care after graduating from an inpatient program.

An outpatient program is usually around 3 months long.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) – An IOP offers a higher level of care than a typical outpatient program, though not as much as an inpatient one. With an IOP, patients usually meet for treatment in the evenings several times a week (like outpatient). However, sessions are usually longer and occur more frequently than outpatient.

This is a great choice for individuals who need more focused treatment than outpatient can offer but can’t sacrifice the time or money required for an inpatient program.

These programs usually last about 3 months as well.

One of the biggest concerns for addicts considering professional treatment is often the costs. For many, they imagine treatment being prohibitively expensive. The 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that worries about related expenses were actually the number one cause of not seeking treatment for almost one-third of respondents.

But the truth is, professional addiction treatment has actually never been more affordable. This is mostly due to recent changes in the laws governing health care and insurance. The Affordable Care Act, for instance, forced all individual and small group insurance providers to cover treatment at least partially.

As a result, if you have health insurance, there's a good chance that your provider will help you cover the costs. Some may even foot the entire bill, leaving you to pay little more than a small co-pay.

Plans vary from provider to provider though, so be sure to verify your insurance coverage before partnering with any particular program.

And if you don’t have private insurance, there are always federally funded options to consider like Medicaid and Medicare.

Finally, if private insurance is out of reach and you don’t qualify for public insurance, many treatment programs are also willing to work with patients on an individual level. Payment plans, financing options, and even sliding scale prices are all quite common in the industry.

So don’t be afraid to reach out to a program personally to find out more about your options.

There are around 8 treatment centers within the Chubbuck/Pocatello area. And for residents here, that might seem like more than enough options to choose from.

And while there may be some great facilities in the area, it’s important to remember that no one should limit their treatment scope to where they live alone. Sometimes travelling for your treatment needs can be one of the best decisions that you’ll ever make when deciding on a program for you.

That’s because opening up your options to other surrounding areas can help you find a program that isn’t just more affordable or effective but will also match your specific needs for tackling an addiction problem.

Added to that, it can help you avoid distractions and become even more serious about your treatment needs. Plus, it’s a more private, confidential way of recovery.

In the end, the most important part is to make sure your needs are being met by a treatment program and that you’re getting the highest level of quality care available.
