How Bad Has the Drug Problem Gotten?

Addiction hurts everyone. It causes a strain on finances, relationships, physical health, work, and every other part of your life. It strikes regardless of location, age, race, or class. And it isn't an easy thing to deal with on your own.

Prescription drugs are one of the biggest catalysts of addiction in recent years, and the dependency on them has grown to epidemic levels. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), more than 11.5 million Americans reported misusing prescription opioids in the past year.

On top of that, of the 72 thousand estimated drug overdose deaths in 2017, almost 30 thousand were due to synthetic opioids alone.

But it isn’t just opioids either. According to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in the U.S. in 2017…

  • Cocaine killed almost 15 thousand people
  • Deaths from meth numbered almost 11 thousand
  • Heroin was responsible for almost 16 thousand deaths
  • Benzodiazepines like Xanax were involved in almost 11 thousand deaths

Clearly, this isn't a problem limited to just a handful of people.

Communities in Idaho like Caldwell are no exception to the growing drug trend. And just as it has around the country, Idaho’s problem with substance abuse continues to grow as well.

Here are a few stats to help give some perspective on the problem.

  • Heroin deaths in the state more than doubled from 2012 to 2016.
  • Prescription opioid overdose deaths increased by over 71% from 2012 to 2016.
  • Almost 4% of Idaho residents 12 and older reported nonmedical use of prescription pain relievers from 2013 to 2014.
  • Around 15% of adults in the Nampa area report that they’ve struggled with alcoholism at least once during their lifetime.
  • Almost one-third of all traffic-related deaths in Nampa were attributable to drunk driving in 2016.
  • The amount of heroin seized by the Idaho State Police jumped by an astounding 800% from 2014 to 2015.
  • Meth cases from 2014 to 2015 increased by more than 300%.
  • Stimulant deaths jumped by 75% from 2014 to 2015.
  • 93% of officers in the area that responded to a national survey said that among the drugs available today, meth contributes the most to violent crime.

Getting Help During an Overdose

Drug overdoses today are more likely to occur than they ever have been. In fact, overdosing is now the leading cause of death in Americans under the age of 50. And all signs point to the problem continuing to get worse.

And if you suspect someone is suffering from an overdose, the absolute most important step in caring for them is contacting emergency services immediately by calling 9-1-1. Not only will the professionals on the other end of the line send an ambulance your way, but they’ll also be able to instruct you in how to administer a variety of life-saving measures while you wait for them to arrive.

It’s incredibly important, however, that you do not hesitate. Each minute can be the difference between a full recovery or permanent and potentially fatal brain damage.

Once emergency services arrive, they'll likely take the victim to one of the following hospitals or emergency rooms.

West Valley Medical Center
Phone #: (208) 459-4641
Address: 1717 Arlington Ave, Caldwell, ID 83605

St. Luke’s Nampa Medical Center
Phone #: (208) 505-2000
Address: 9850 W St Lukes Dr, Nampa, ID 83687

While the most important part of handling an overdose is getting emergency service help, the first step is actually identifying the physical and mental signs of this potentially fatal condition.

This can actually be more difficult than many people might imagine. Most people think that surely they'll be able to tell if someone is overdosing. But in reality, the symptoms aren't always so clear-cut.

Individual physiology, the amount taken, whether it was mixed with other substances, and many other factors all come into play in which symptoms actually present.

However, there are a number of common physical signs of an overdose you should look for based on what type of drug was abused.

Cocaine – Signs of a cocaine overdose include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – Some of the most notable symptoms of alcohol poisoning include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness

  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Heroin – Symptoms of a heroin overdose might include:

  • No breathing

  • Slow and difficult breathing
  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips
  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines
  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation

Benzodiazepines – Overdosing on benzodiazepines like diazepam may present the following physical and psychological signs:

  • Bluish-colored lips and fingernails
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Breathing is slow, labored, or stopped
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness, lack of alertness
  • Excitability
  • Hiccups
  • Rapid side-to-side movement of the eyes
  • Rash
  • Stomach upset
  • Tiredness
  • Tremor
  • Weakness, uncoordinated movement

12-Step Support Groups

In most people’s minds, support groups for addiction are synonymous with 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Al-Anon.

Caldwell Addiction Resources

And it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise either. 12-step groups like these are without a doubt some of the most popular and widespread self-help groups the world has ever seen. And since their founding in the early 1900s, they’ve helped literally millions of people abstain from using and finding the joy of a clean and sober life.

In fact, these types of groups have become so popular that they've expanded from the single original 12-step group (Alcoholics Anonymous) into more than 30 different offshoots including:

If someone has a serious problem, chances are there’s a 12-step group devoted to it.

And these groups have been proven to help people recover from their substance abuse when used effectively. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) even lists it as one of the 8 evidence-based behavioral therapies for recovery.

Within the Caldwell, Idaho area, there are three 12-step groups in particular that residents can use to help treat their substance abuse problems: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Al-Anon.

The 12-step group that started it all, Alcoholics Anonymous or AA was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1935.

Within 5 years of its beginnings, membership grew to around 1,400, and the number of groups around the country expanded to an impressive 50. Since then, AA has grown to almost 2.1 million members and over 120 thousand weekly groups around the world.

Alcoholics Anonymous can be a critical component of any alcoholism recovery program. It’s widely available, free to attend, 100% confidential, and one of the best and easiest ways to build up a support network.

Added to that, the benefits of what is essentially group therapy can be especially powerful in helping alcoholics overcome cravings, avoid triggers, and learn from the experiences of others.

The Caldwell community hosts plenty of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the area. Anyone struggling with alcoholism, then, has a number of different choices for groups that they can attend.

One of the best things about Alcoholics Anonymous is the fact that there are so many different groups to choose from. Whether the meetings above conflict with your schedule, don’t match your beliefs, or simply don’t have the right feel, there are still plenty of other meetings taking place nearby.

Have a look at the list below for some of the closest. Each takes place less than an hour away from Caldwell and, like every other anonymous group, is open to anyone who wishes to have more control over their drinking.

Narcotics Anonymous or NA is one of the first offshoots of AA and follows the same 12-step format, just like other anonymous groups. But while AA focuses on a single substance of abuse, NA is open to healing addiction in all its forms. And despite common misconceptions, it welcomes alcoholics just as it does heroin users, meth addicts, and substance abusers of any kind.

And while the organization is composed of almost 67 thousand meetings taking place in 139 countries, it isn’t quite as large as Alcoholics Anonymous. As a result, finding an NA meeting nearby can be a bit trickier.

But luckily, the Caldwell area still has a number of different NA groups that addicts of all kinds can attend.

Thankfully there are plenty of Narcotics Anonymous meetings to choose from in within the Caldwell area. The closest ones are listed below.

Addiction is a complicated disease. In addition to the fact that it’s still not fully understood, it is also especially devastating because it impacts nearly every aspect of an individual’s life.

And that includes friends, family members, and even associates and coworkers.

When it comes to recovery, these other individuals are often left behind while the addict themselves remain the focus of treatment. However, it’s important that friends and family members also have access to the support they need to resume healthy, functional lives as well.

For them, there’s Al-Anon – a friend/family focused 12-step group that helps these individuals recover from the fallout from a loved one’s addiction.

Topics discussed here can include everything from:

Al-Anon can be an essential support group for anyone who has had to watch a friend or family member succumb to addiction.

There is also Alateen – an Al-Anon subgroup devoted to helping teenagers cope with addiction in their family or circle of friends. These groups are specially designed to take into account the age-specific issues that these individuals face during their formative years. They can also provide a support network of similarly aged peers, making members more open to sharing and healing.

Caldwell’s close proximity to larger cities like Boise means that residents of this community have greater access to Al-Anon groups. The closest ones are listed below.

Other Self-Help Support Groups

12-step groups like those above aren’t the only option when it comes to nearby support groups. In fact, there are a number of alternatives to AA and NA that many people in the area may not even know about.

Three of the largest and most helpful are SMART Recovery, Secular Organizations for Sobriety, and Moderation Management.

One of the biggest and most popular evidence-based alternatives to 12-step groups is SMART Recovery. This group is abstinence-based just like anonymous groups but doesn’t follow the 12-step model.

Instead, it teaches members concrete techniques and strategies for coping with cravings, avoiding triggers, and maintaining a sober lifestyle. Groups are led by a certified instructor rather than the members themselves and lessons change as new discoveries in the field of addiction are made.

One of the major differentiators from 12-step groups is that it teaches self-reliance in the face of addiction rather than powerlessness.

To find a meeting, check out their online meeting search engine.

A major complaint against 12-step groups is that it seems to exude a sense of spirituality – that members must believe in something metaphysical in order to overcome their addiction.

Secular Organizations for Sobriety (S.O.S.) aim to offer addicts a path to sobriety without this spiritual component. It’s a legal 501(c)3 non-profit organization and has been helping people conquer addiction for more than 3 decades.

To find a meeting, head over to their meeting locator page.

Not all problem drinkers are alcoholics. And not everyone will need to give up drinking entirely in order to get their substance abuse problem under control. For those individuals, there’s Moderation Management (MM).

This type of program is ideal for people who don’t identify as alcoholics but still want to have a bit more control over their drinking.

Have a look at Moderation Management’s FAQ page for more information and to find out if MM is right for you.

Online Support Groups for More Flexibility

Not everyone will be able to make it to in-person meetings. Time constraints, lack of access to a vehicle, a prohibitively busy schedule, and so much more can all make catching a meeting tough.

Luckily, there are plenty of online alternatives to in-person meetings. These groups can include everything from regular emails and forum posts to real-time chats and even Skype calls. No matter how you want to communicate, there’s probably an online option devoted to it.

Have a look below to see some of the most popular options available.

Getting Professional Treatment

While education and social support are key to preventing and treating an addiction, the overwhelming majority of people will need a much higher level of care in order to maintain long-term sobriety.

Thankfully, there are a variety of professional treatment centers in the area to choose from. In fact, there are at least within Caldwell itself.

However, it’s important to remember that while some programs might be closer than others, proximity isn’t the only thing to look for in a professional program. Quality of care, comfort of amenities, qualifications of staff, personalization of treatment plans, and so much more should all come into play as well.

Just because a program is close, then, doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you. You can use this quick rehab facility checklist to help you figure out if a program is a good fit for your individual needs.

Finding the right professional program can be tough for many. One of the most confusing aspects of it all is trying to figure out the difference between the various services and program types that are offered.

This quick run-through will help you better understand what each kind of program offers and ultimately put you in a better place to decide which program is right for you.

DetoxificationDetox is the first step in treating a drug or alcohol addiction. This stage of recovery is when the body firsts begins to get used to functioning without the substance of abuse. This process can be painful and even deadly for some drug types, which is why many users tend to resort back to using as a relief from the discomfort.

A professional detox program (which is usually coupled with inpatient rehab but not outpatient) provides a more comfortable setting in which to go through this process. Medical staff will also monitor the health of the patient throughout, enabling them to prevent and treat any serious complications that may arise. They may also administer certain medications to reduce the severity and duration of withdrawals as well.

Inpatient RehabilitationRehab is where the more mental healing from addiction takes place and is usually composed of behavioral therapies aimed at changing the way the brain functions on a day-to-day level. Individual counseling and group therapy are a big part of rehab too.

An inpatient form of rehab requires patients to stay on campus at all times. Eating, sleeping, treatment, and leisure all take place within the confines of the program, allowing for a more controlled environment and less of a chance of relapse.

The tradeoff, however, is less freedom and a much more significant commitment than other programs. Patients, for example, are usually not able to continue their education, go to work, or even attend to certain familial obligations during this time. It can also cost more than other programs.

An inpatient program is usually around one month long.

Outpatient RehabAn outpatient program will typically employ the same treatments and therapies as inpatient programs. However, it offers much more flexibility. Instead of patients being required to stay on the campus at all times, they come in for treatment for several hours at a time, usually in the evenings.

As a result, recovering addicts can go to work, attend classes, and live their day-to-day lives much more normally than with an inpatient program.

While an outpatient program is more flexible, it doesn’t offer the same level of care and treatment as an inpatient program since less time is devoted to it. Plus, the risk of can be much higher since the environment is not nearly as controlled.

An outpatient program is usually around three months long.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)A step up from outpatient, an intensive outpatient program or IOP offers a more focused form of treatment without the level of commitment required for an inpatient program.

Patients in these programs will typically meet during the evenings (like outpatient), but treatment sessions will usually last much longer and occur more frequently.

These programs are usually around three months long as well.

It’s a great way to receive a higher level of care without giving up the time and money that most inpatient programs require.

If there's one thing that almost everyone thinks about when considering professional treatment, it's cost. The price tag of treatment can be a deal breaker for some. And in fact, nearly one-third of addicts who knew they needed treatment but didn't get it cited the cost of treatment as the primary reason.

And it’s true – treatment can be pricey in some cases. But today more than ever, it’s actually a lot more affordable than most people think.

Part of it has to do with health insurance. After the passage of two key laws, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the majority of insurers were required to cover addiction treatment more completely than ever before.

And depending on the provider, some patients may only be responsible for a small copay – that’s it.

As always though, it’s important to know what you’re covered for beforehand. That’s why you should always verify your insurance coverage before partnering with any program.

If you don't have private insurance, you may be able to use federally-funded health care through Medicare or Medicaid. These programs are designed only for the elderly, those with special needs, or the economically disadvantaged, so not everyone will qualify.

And finally, many facilities are willing to work with patients on a one-on-one basis to figure out payment. They may use payment plans, financing options, or even sliding scale pricing. So don’t be afraid to personally reach out to programs if you’re afraid you can’t cover the costs.

In the end, there are a variety of resources available to help make professional treatment a financially viable option for you. And no matter what kind of treatment you get, the costs are nothing compared to the expense of addiction as a whole.
