Since that day, AA has grown incredibly. It is now possible to find an AA meeting in nearly every city in every state in the United States. There are also meetings in many other countries all over the world.
Millions of people have benefited from attending AA meetings. It is very helpful to have other people who also battle alcoholism to talk to. They understand what people are going through and can offer excellent support.
There are many different types of AA meetings. It is important to note the difference between open and closed. Anyone can attend an open meeting, even if they are not alcoholics. People usually like to bring a friend along for additional support when they go to open meetings for the first time. Closed meetings are only for people who are alcoholics.
In addition to being either open or closed, the meetings usually center on different topics. Some will go through all of the 12 Steps in order. Others will focus on one or two of the 12 Steps. There are speaker meetings and those that are just for discussion or studying the AA text, which is called The Big Book.
The people at AA meetings are always very friendly. They welcome new people joining them and are always willing to listen and befriend them when they come.

Narcotics Anonymous is an organization that was started as an answer to a need that drug addicts had to recover. AA was only for alcoholics, and people who were struggling with other types of substance abuse problems really had nowhere else to turn. They needed something that would provide the same type of support. NA gave that to them.
NA was started in 1955, and like AA, it quickly expanded. Most cities in the United States have some type of NA meeting for people to attend. What is interesting about this organization is that they are all-inclusive. They believe that all types of addictions need support. They also believe that just because a person is an alcoholic, that does not mean they should not attend NA. Anyone with any type of substance abuse problem at all can attend one of their meetings.
Like AA, Narcotics Anonymous is a non-profit organization. They do not charge their members any type of membership fee in order to attend meetings. The only requirement is that they have a desire to stop using.
Some people claim that NA meetings are much more laid back and informal than AA meetings. They also have the open and closed formats, and anyone is allowed to attend an open meeting. The closed meetings are only for people recovering from addictions.
People who are attending NA usually plan to stay for about an hour and a half. During that time, the members have discussions with one another and there may also be special speakers and events.
The people at NA are very friendly. They always welcome newcomers very warmly, and many even try to make an instant connection with someone who is new to the program. People generally leave the meeting feeling like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. In time, it becomes more like a family get together than an obligation.

Nothing can compare to the pain that the family of an addict experiences. They spend so much time worrying about their loved one, and yet they feel powerless to help them. Far too often, families fail to take care of themselves. Many end up feeling anxious, depressed, or even suffering from mental illnesses. They need a place to talk about what they are going through. That is why Al-Anon is so important.
Al-Anon offers weekly meetings for the families of addicts to come together and discuss their situations and challenges. People are more than welcome to just come and listen, but those who get the most out of it are the ones who share with the group.
Anyone is allowed to attend Al-Anon, regardless of their age. People find unconditional support and encouragement and these meetings give them the strength to get through another week.

Alateen is a part of the Al-Anon organization. The only difference is that it is only for young people, teenagers and at times, older children.
For young people who have an addicted loved one, life can be extremely difficult. They may be forced to make choices that they do not understand. They face situations that no one their age should ever have to face. Many find it difficult to open up to their peers at school about what they are going through. Alateen provides them with that necessary outlet.
At Alateen meetings, young people can talk with each other about all of their challenges. They can make new friends and find like-minded people who understand what they are going through. This arm of Al-Anon has done so much to help teenagers and their work is vital.
