What to Expect in Rehab

To settle the unease that someone may have about entering a substance abuse treatment program, it is best to know what they can expect when they enter a rehab facility. While treatment will vary for each unique patient, they will all have the same main phases:

  • Detox
  • Recovery
  • Aftercare

Once a patient starts their treatment program, the first step is to wean off the substance they have been abusing. This step helps their body relearn how to function without drugs or alcohol. The length and difficulty of detox depend on the intensity of the patient’s addiction. The severity of withdrawal symptoms will also vary and may potentially be dangerous. It is always best to undergo detox under the supervision of trained medical professionals.

After the substance is gone from the body, the patient can begin their recovery program. Recovery involves learning and addressing the underlying causes and triggers of substance abuse. The patient will also learn new, healthier habits for them to maintain and achieve sobriety. The recovery phase of the treatment program may include all or a combination of the following:

  • One-on-one counseling
  • Relapse prevention
  • Family therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Group therapy

Upon completing the recovery program, the patient reintegrates into their life, armed with the proper tools to maintain their new sober mindset. However, relapse is always possible, which is why aftercare is essential to any successful addiction treatment program.

What Are the Kinds of Relapse?

Relapses can happen at any time, even after years or decades of sobriety. Being familiar with the kinds of relapse can allow someone to identify the danger and seek support to mitigate the situation. The types of relapse are:

  • Emotional relapse – Often the first kind of relapse to occur, this is characterized by withdrawal from support systems, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and the suppression of feelings.
  • Mental relapse – At this stage, the patient has become ambivalent about maintaining sobriety. They may start to minimize the adverse effects of their addiction and may be actively looking for a reason to relapse.
  • Physical relapse – Returning to drug or alcohol abuse, regardless of the amount or frequency of consumption. Once this relapse occurs, it is best to return to an addiction treatment program to regain sobriety.
